New Blender users often wonder why their sphere or curved object looks blocky and faceted. The fix is Shade Smooth, and it takes one click. Knowing when to use it, and how to fix the odd results, will make your models look far more polished.
The one-click fix
- Make sure you are in Object Mode.
- Select your object.
- Right-click and choose Shade Smooth.
The faceted look vanishes. Importantly, this does not add any geometry. It only changes how Blender calculates light across the surface, so the same model simply looks smooth.
When Shade Smooth looks wrong
Plain Shade Smooth smooths every edge, which is great for organic shapes but bad for hard-surface objects like a box or a mug, where some edges should stay crisp. If your model looks blotchy or its hard edges go soft:
- Right-click and choose Shade Auto Smooth instead. It keeps edges sharp above an angle you set (30 degrees is a good default) and smooths the rest.
- For hard-surface models, adding a Weighted Normal modifier cleans up shading even further.
Smooth shading vs actual smoothness
Shade Smooth is a visual trick, not real roundness. If the silhouette of your object is still blocky (you can see the flat edges around the outline), you need more geometry. Add a Subdivision Surface modifier to genuinely round the shape, then Shade Smooth for a perfect finish. The two are often used together.
