How to Render an Image in Blender

Render a finished image in Blender. Learn the difference between Eevee and Cycles, how to set your camera, hit render, and save the result.

Rendering is the final step: turning your 3D scene into a finished 2D image. It is where lighting, materials and camera angle all come together. The process is quick once you know the three things that matter: the engine, the camera, and hitting render.

Step 1: Choose your render engine

In Render Properties (the camera-back icon in the Properties editor), set the Render Engine:

  • Eevee: fast and real-time. Perfect for learning, quick results and stylised looks.
  • Cycles: slower but physically accurate, with realistic lighting, reflections and glass. Use it when you want photoreal results.

Start with Eevee while you learn.

Step 2: Set up your camera

A render uses the camera view, not your working viewport.

  1. Add a camera with Shift + A > Camera if there is none.
  2. Frame your shot: press Numpad 0 to look through the camera, then use N to open the sidebar and adjust, or select the camera and move it.
  3. A handy trick: position your viewport how you like it, then press Ctrl + Alt + Numpad 0 to snap the camera to your current view.

Step 3: Add light

Renders need light. If your scene is dark, add a light with Shift + A > Light > Sun or Area, and see how to add lighting for placement tips. A scene with no light renders black.

Step 4: Render and save

  1. Go to Render > Render Image, or press F12.
  2. Blender opens a new window and renders your image.
  3. To keep it, choose Image > Save As in that render window and pick a location and format (PNG is a safe default).

Tip: control quality and size

In Output Properties set your resolution (1920 by 1080 is standard). In Cycles, higher samples mean less noise but longer renders. For learning, keep samples modest so renders stay fast.

Frequently asked questions

How do I render an image in Blender?

Point your camera at the scene, then go to Render > Render Image or press F12. Blender opens a new window and produces the final image. Save it with Image > Save As from that window.

What is the difference between Eevee and Cycles in Blender?

Eevee is a fast, real-time renderer, great for quick results and previews. Cycles is a slower, physically accurate ray-traced renderer that produces more realistic lighting and reflections. Choose in Render Properties under Render Engine.

Why is my render black or empty?

Usually there is no camera pointing at the scene, or no lighting. Add a camera (Shift + A > Camera), aim it at your object, and make sure the scene has a light. Renders use the camera view, not your working viewport.
