How to Add Lighting in Blender

Light a scene in Blender using the four light types: Point, Sun, Spot and Area. Learn what each does and a simple setup that makes any object look good.

Lighting is what makes a 3D scene feel real or dramatic. Good materials and models fall flat without it. Blender gives you four light types, and once you know what each does, lighting a scene becomes quick and creative.

The four light types

Add any of them with Shift + A > Light:

  • Point: light radiating in all directions from a single spot, like a bare bulb.
  • Sun: parallel rays from one direction, like real sunlight. Its position does not matter, only its angle.
  • Spot: a focused cone of light, good for highlighting one area.
  • Area: a soft, rectangular light source. The most flexible and realistic, and a great default.

Step 1: Add and position a light

  1. Press Shift + A > Light > Area.
  2. Move it with G and rotate with R so it faces your object.
  3. Switch the viewport to Rendered shading (top-right sphere icons) so you can see the light working as you adjust it.

Step 2: Control the light

In Light Properties (the lightbulb icon), the key settings are:

  • Power: brightness. If your scene is dark, this is usually the fix.
  • Color: warm or cool tone to set the mood.
  • Size (Area and Point): larger sizes give softer shadows, smaller sizes give sharper ones.

A simple three-point setup

A reliable starting point that flatters almost any object:

  1. A bright key light at roughly 45 degrees to one side, in front.
  2. A dimmer fill light on the opposite side to soften the shadows.
  3. A rim or back light behind the object to separate it from the background.

You do not always need all three, but this setup is a dependable foundation.

Frequently asked questions

How do I add a light in Blender?

Press Shift + A and choose Light, then pick a type (Point, Sun, Spot or Area). Move it into position and increase its Power in the Light Properties until the scene is lit the way you want.

Which light should I use in Blender?

Area lights are the most flexible and give soft, realistic results, so they are a great default. Sun lights mimic outdoor daylight, Point lights act like a bulb, and Spot lights create a focused cone.

Why is my Blender scene still dark after adding a light?

The light's Power is likely too low, or it is too far away or pointing the wrong way. Increase Power in Light Properties, move it closer, and make sure it faces your object.
