WhatsApp is the closest thing the world has to a universal messaging layer. It carries family group chats in Sao Paulo, doctor appointments in Delhi, and customer support for small shops in Lagos, all inside one green app. In April 2025 it crossed a milestone only a handful of products have ever reached: 3 billion people using it every month.

What makes the story interesting in 2026 is not just the scale. It is that WhatsApp, long the quiet, ad-free member of Meta’s family, is about to change how it makes money. Below are the latest WhatsApp statistics, refreshed from Meta’s earnings calls, its 2025 newsroom announcements, and current usage data.

How Many People Use WhatsApp

WhatsApp Passed 3 Billion Monthly Active Users in 2025

WhatsApp crossed 3 billion monthly active users in April 2025, a milestone Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg confirmed on the company’s first-quarter earnings call. For context, the app hit 2 billion users in 2020, so it added a full billion in about four years.

That puts WhatsApp in extremely rare company. Only a few products on earth, most of them owned by Meta or Google, have ever reached the 3 billion mark. It sits alongside Facebook near the top of the list of the most-used platforms in the world.

Roughly 2.3 Billion People Use WhatsApp Every Day

Monthly users tell you reach, but daily users tell you habit. An estimated 2.3 billion people open WhatsApp every day, which is roughly 77% of the monthly total. Very few apps hold that high a ratio of daily to monthly use, and it is the clearest sign of how deeply WhatsApp is woven into everyday routines, especially outside the United States.

Where WhatsApp Is Biggest

India Is WhatsApp’s Largest Market by Far

India is WhatsApp’s single biggest country with roughly 535.8 million users, which alone accounts for about one in six WhatsApp users on the planet. Brazil sits a distant second, followed by Indonesia. In much of South Asia, Latin America, and Africa, WhatsApp is not just a messaging app; it is the default way people communicate, more common than phone calls or email.

The United States Is a Smaller but Fast-Growing Market

The US has historically lagged the rest of the world on WhatsApp, but that is changing. Zuckerberg noted that WhatsApp now has more than 100 million users in the United States and is one of Meta’s fastest-growing US products. Some measurement firms put the 2025 US audience even higher, around 124 million. American users skew younger, with Gen Z and millennials making up the majority of the base.

WhatsApp Is Available in More Than 180 Countries

WhatsApp is available in over 180 countries and supports around 60 languages. Its main gaps are markets where it is blocked or restricted, such as China, where local apps like WeChat dominate instead. That near-global footprint is why WhatsApp, Instagram, and Facebook together give Meta reach into almost every connected country on earth.

How Much People Message and Call

An Estimated 150 Billion Messages a Day

The last figure Meta confirmed officially was more than 100 billion messages a day, disclosed back in 2020. Current 2025 estimates from data aggregators put the number closer to 150 billion messages every day. Either way, the scale is staggering: 150 billion messages a day works out to well over a million messages every second.

Voice Notes Have Become a Core Habit

WhatsApp users send about 7 billion voice messages every day, roughly 5% of all messages on the platform. Voice notes have grown from a novelty into a primary way people talk, especially in markets where typing in a local script is slower than simply speaking. On top of that, users spend billions of minutes a day on WhatsApp voice and video calls, which run over the same end-to-end encrypted channel as text.

WhatsApp Business and Channels

WhatsApp Business Passed 200 Million Monthly Users

The free WhatsApp Business app has grown from about 50 million monthly users in 2020 to more than 200 million today, a fourfold increase. Around 175 million people message a business account on WhatsApp every single day, whether to track an order, ask a question, or complete a purchase. For millions of small merchants in emerging markets, WhatsApp is effectively their storefront, catalog, and checkout in one.

Channels Reached 500 Million Monthly Users

WhatsApp Channels, the one-to-many broadcast feature launched in 2023, grew fast. Meta reported that Channels had more than 500 million monthly active users by the end of 2024, roughly a year after launch. Channels put WhatsApp into more direct competition with broadcast-style apps like Telegram, and they are central to Meta’s plans to make money from the app.

How WhatsApp Makes Money

Meta Is Finally Bringing Ads to WhatsApp

For most of its life WhatsApp carried no ads at all, earning revenue mainly by charging businesses for messages sent through its Business Platform. That changes in 2025. Meta announced in June 2025 that it would introduce advertising in three forms: ads in the Status section of the Updates tab, promoted Channels that businesses pay to surface in search, and paid monthly subscriptions to Channels, on which Meta plans to take a 10% cut.

Crucially, Meta says personal chats stay end-to-end encrypted and ad-free. Ads live only in the Updates tab, not in your conversations. Given WhatsApp’s 3 billion-user base, even a modest ad business could become one of Meta’s largest new revenue lines, which is exactly why the company is turning it on now.

The Bottom Line

WhatsApp in 2026 is a study in scale meeting strategy. Three billion monthly users, an estimated 150 billion messages a day, and a footprint across more than 180 countries make it one of the most-used products ever built. For years that reach sat almost entirely unmonetized.

The next chapter is about turning that audience into a business. Channels crossed 500 million users, WhatsApp Business passed 200 million, and ads are arriving in the Updates tab for the first time. If Meta gets the balance right, keeping private chats sacred while monetizing the edges, WhatsApp could shift from Meta’s quiet utility to one of its biggest growth engines.
