OpenAI’s ChatGPT has taken the tech world by storm, redefining how we interact with technology. In a recent MIT study, this chatbot demonstrated its potential by boosting productivity by 40%.

From its unassuming beginnings as a “research preview,” ChatGPT has become one of history’s fastest-growing consumer apps, and companies worldwide are racing to harness its underlying capabilities.

But how exactly does it work, and what is the actual level of usage it is getting? Here are 10 ChatGPT statistics to understand the impact of AI nowadays.

What is ChatGPT?

ChatGPT is an AI-powered chatbot that went public in November 2022. By January 2023, it had already become one of the fastest-adopted software in history.

From code writing to crafting blog posts, composing essays, and even learning how to cook a new dish with the ingredients you have in the fridge (yes, people tried that, too), ChatGPT has made waves with its capabilities, proving AI is no longer a niche fascination, and its impact on the world is just beginning to unfold.

ChatGPT is built upon GPT-3.5, an advanced large language model (LLM) released by OpenAI. It’s based on a dataset of 300 billion words and 175 billion parameters to operate on a simple premise: You type commands into a text box, and it performs complex tasks for you.

ChatGPT usage statistics

ChatGPT has seen significant adoption since its launch. Trained on a wide array of web content, it has garnered attention for its ability to assist workers in different fields. But how many users are currently using the chatbot?

1. ChatGPT reached 100 million monthly active users in January 2023

Just two months after its launch, ChatGPT reached 100 million monthly active users, marking a milestone in the AI landscape, as Reuters reported.

However, like many technologies, ChatGPT’s initial surge in popularity has slightly waned.

2. By June 2023, ChatGPT’s unique visitors had dropped by 5.7%

Today, ChatGPT has more visitors than notable sites like Bing.com, Microsoft’s search engine, and Character.AI (the second most popular AI chatbot platform.)

However, despite its initial surge in popularity, in the latest findings, ChatGPT experienced its first decline in monthly unique visitors, which dropped by 5.7%.

Additionally, visitor engagement, as gauged by the time spent on the website, decreased by 8.5%. While ChatGPT remains a significant player in the AI landscape, its rapid ascent shows signs of slowing down.

According to Similarweb, in June 2023, its website witnessed a decline in global desktop and mobile traffic by 9.7% compared to May.

3. The ChatGPT app is available in 152 countries

The ChatGPT app has rapidly expanded its reach since its May 2023 debut. Initially available on iOS in select regions, it quickly amassed over 500,000 downloads in six days.

Now, the app is accessible to users across 152 countries, regardless of whether they prefer Android or iOS devices.

The ChatGPT app offers an ad-free experience and integrates voice input functionality through OpenAI’s Whisper speech recognition system.

For those seeking additional capabilities, a ChatGPT Plus subscription, priced at $20 per month, unlocks advanced features driven by GPT-4, enhancing the overall user experience.

4. Only about 18% of Americans have ever actually used ChatGPT

While some tech fans have praised ChatGPT as a big deal, most people in the U.S. haven’t tried it.

A recent survey by the Pew Research Center found that only around 18% of Americans have used ChatGPT, even though it’s been getting a lot of attention. Even among people who know about ChatGPT, only 24% have given it a shot, and that’s not a lot when you look at all U.S. adults.

The survey also shows that most Americans think chatbots like ChatGPT will only partially affect their job prospects, and even fewer believe chatbots can make their work more manageable. So, there’s still a lot of room for these AI tools to grow and become more widely used.

5. One in five U.S. adults who have heard of ChatGPT say they have ever used it for entertainment

Younger adults seem more inclined to use ChatGPT for learning or amusement than their older counterparts. However, when it comes to using it for work-related tasks, only 16% of those who know about the tool and are employed have used it.

On the flip side, about one in five American adults who have heard of ChatGPT have used it for entertainment, and a similar number (19%) have turned to it for learning something new.

6. China leads in global Google searches for ChatGPT, scoring 100 in popularity

China has emerged as a significant player in the ChatGPT demand game, although the app hasn’t officially launched in that country yet.

According to Finbold, China took the lead in Google searches about ChatGPT, registering a peak score of 100 in January 2023, followed by Nepal at 35 and Norway at 28. Singapore and Israel hold the fourth and fifth positions, scoring 27 and 26, respectively.

The heightened demand in China can be attributed to several factors, including users turning to Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) and potentially setting up mirror sites to access the tool.

Upgrades and costs behind ChatGPT

Despite the $1 billion invested in ChatGPT, OpenAI hopes to reach  $200 million in revenue in 2023. Such financial realities may be surprising, given ChatGPT’s immense popularity. However, it is necessary to understand the costs behind this technology and its challenges.

To delve more into these statistics, here are the latest ChatGPT updates and the intriguing costs of this AI.

7. ChatGPT Plus users can now send 50 messages every three hours

OpenAI has increased the number of messages ChatGPT Plus subscribers can send to 50 every three hours, double the previous limit of 25. This upgrade enhances user interaction with the GPT-4 model, the Code Interpreter, and various plugins.

Expanding the messaging capacity addresses the challenges posed by ChatGPT’s high demand, ensuring subscribers get priority access even during peak times.

For businesses, developers, and AI enthusiasts, this announcement gave more utility and value to paid users.

8. ChatGPT costs OpenAI nearly $700,000 per day

Running chatbots like ChatGPT comes with substantial expenses. Initially, ChatGPT’s cost per chat seemed to be just a few cents. However, when you consider that it’s used by over 10 million people daily, those costs add up quickly based on the processing needed to run GPT-3.5 or GPT-4.

An analysis published in February 2023 found that OpenAI spent approximately $700,000 daily on computing to run ChatGPT, emphasizing the significant financial investments required to keep such platforms going.

This financial challenge highlights the dilemma faced by tech giants. They want to provide public access to advanced AI models, but rising operational costs make it complex.

9. ChatGPT operates on 1.5 billion parameters

ChatGPT, although built on the GPT-3 framework, boasts its unique qualities. It received training from various sources, including a particular dataset called Persona-Chat, which had over 160,000 dialogues. That made ChatGPT great at personalizing responses and staying contextually relevant in chats.

Additionally, ChatGPT gathered knowledge from a vast pool of unstructured data found on the internet, like websites and books. This exposure helped ChatGPT understand the overall structure and patterns of language, making it adaptable for tasks such as managing conversations and analyzing sentiments.

As for its size, ChatGPT has 1.5 billion parameters, which, though fewer than GPT-3’s 175 billion, still allows it to excel in various conversational AI tasks.

10. ChatGPT’s monthly energy use equals that of 175,000 people

The use of generative AI has implications for greenhouse gas emissions.

Bhaskar Chakravorti, the dean of global business at Tufts University’s Fletcher School, points out that ChatGPT’s high electricity consumption for just one month matches the energy consumption of 175,000 people in a midsize city.

This energy-intensive characteristic of AI language models like ChatGPT might divert resources from more critical healthcare applications and drug discovery, potentially slowing their development and use.

However, despite the environmental and financial costs associated with AI tools, many companies are still interested in using them because they are more cost-effective than human labor.
