Pro tips

Learn Ctrl+Arrow Navigation

Ctrl+Arrow jumps to the edge of data regions. Combined with Shift, it selects entire ranges instantly. This single combo replaces scrolling through thousands of rows.

Alt+Enter for Multi-Line Cells

Need multiple lines in one cell? Press Alt+Enter to create a line break within a cell. Works in both Google Sheets and Excel.

Ctrl+D Fills Down Instantly

Select cells below a formula or value, then press Ctrl+D to fill down. Faster than dragging the fill handle, especially for large ranges.

Paste Values with Ctrl+Shift+V

When you only want the values (not formulas or formatting), use Ctrl+Shift+V in Google Sheets. In Excel, use Ctrl+Alt+V and select Values.

Quick Date & Time Entry

Ctrl+; enters today's date. Ctrl+Shift+; enters the current time. These are static values - they don't update like =TODAY(). Use formulas for dynamic dates.

Filter with Ctrl+Shift+L

Toggle filters on any data range with Ctrl+Shift+L. Click filter dropdowns to sort, filter by value, or search within columns. Press again to remove.

Frequently asked questions

Are Google Sheets shortcuts the same as Excel?

About 80% overlap. Core shortcuts like Ctrl+C, Ctrl+V, Ctrl+Z, Ctrl+B are identical. Differences: Google Sheets uses Ctrl+Shift+V for paste values (Excel uses Ctrl+Alt+V), and some Google Sheets shortcuts use Ctrl+Alt instead of Ctrl+Shift.

How do I see all keyboard shortcuts in Google Sheets?

Press Ctrl+/ (Windows) or ⌘+/ (Mac) to open the keyboard shortcuts panel. It shows all available shortcuts organized by category. You can also find them under Help → Keyboard shortcuts.

How do I select non-adjacent cells?

Hold Ctrl (or ⌘ on Mac) and click individual cells or drag to select ranges. This works for formatting, formulas (like SUM), and other operations across non-contiguous selections.

What's the fastest way to fill a formula down?

Enter the formula in the first cell, select the cell plus the range below it, then press Ctrl+D. Or double-click the fill handle. In Google Sheets, you can also use ARRAYFORMULA to apply a formula to an entire column.

How do I enter a formula in multiple cells at once?

Select all the cells where you want the formula, type the formula, then press Ctrl+Enter (not just Enter). The formula is entered in all selected cells simultaneously.

How do I wrap text in a cell?

In Google Sheets: Format → Text wrapping → Wrap. Or use the toolbar button. In Excel: Home → Wrap Text. There's no default keyboard shortcut, but you can add line breaks within cells with Alt+Enter.
