Global Daily Screen Time Usage Statistics

Two-Thirds of Planet is Using the Internet in 2024

Recent research shows that internet usage is on the rise globally. In 2024, over 5.3 billion people, which is about 66.2% of the world’s population, are using the internet2.

The online community grew by 97 million compared to the past year, marking a 1.8% increase. While this growth rate has slowed compared to previous years, millions of people still get internet access daily.

As technology continues to change our lives, leaders emphasize the importance of digital skills and making the Internet accessible to all.

5 Billion People Are Now Active on Social Media

According to DataReportal, social media continues its meteoric rise, with 5.04 billion users worldwide as of early 2024. That represents over 62% of the global population and 94.2% of all internet users.

The past year saw a 5.6% jump in active accounts - 266 million new users. That translates to nearly 730,000 new social media users daily, or 8.4 per second.

While slowing from pandemic highs, adoption still grew in late 2023. But with most eligible audiences already active, growth should moderate going forward.

How Much Time Does The Average Person Spend On Their Phone?

Typical User Spends Over 2 Hours Daily on Social Media

The average social media user spends 2 hours and 23 minutes daily on social platforms, according to recent GWI research. That is slightly lower than 2023, possibly due to methodological changes.

Nonetheless, it highlights the important role of social media in society, with humanity expected to spend a total of 500 million years on these platforms in 2024.

Impact of Screen Time: Sedentary Time Jumps Nearly 3 Hours in 10 Years

A new study led by the University of Eastern Finland in Kuopio reveals sedentary behavior has climbed sharply among youth over the past decade3.

Tracking activity levels from childhood to adulthood shows average daily inactive time increased by 2.8 hours.

Even for those of normal weight, prolonged sitting was linked with heart damage. “All those hours of screen time add up to a heavier heart,” warns Andrew Agbaje, the lead researcher, urging more movement to protect long-term health.

Daily Screen Time Statistics: Average Screen Time By Region

What’s the average American screen time per day?

Even as total screen time rises, the latest data shows Americans are checking their phones less compulsively.

Users now tap into their devices an average of 144 times daily, a 58% drop versus 2022, Fortune reported.

However, average phone use still climbs to 4 hours 25 minutes a day - up 30% year-over-year.4

People in the United Arab Emirates Have the Highest Global Screen Time Score

The latest Proxyrack findings show that the United Arab Emirates (UAE) tops the global charts for screen time usage. With a score of 8.37 out of 10, the UAE surpasses all other countries in daily online engagement.5

A staggering 99% of the population are Internet users, with 57% of daily Internet activity occurring on mobile devices.

That places the UAE firmly at the forefront of digital connectivity.

Over 90% of British Kids Own Phones by Age 11

According to regulators, kids in the UK are growing up as digital natives. The Guardian reports that 91% of children have a personal smartphone by age 11.

Similarly, 80% of European 9 to 16-year-olds go online daily on phones. In the US, smartphone ownership climbs from 42% of 10-year-olds to 91% by age 14.6

How Much Time Do Children and Teens Spend in Front of a Screen in 2024?

Over 19% of Students Spend 3+ Hours on Screens Post-COVID

According to Peking University, the COVID-19 pandemic radically increased daily screen time for young students.7

Before 2020, just 9.16% of primary and middle school children exceeded 3 hours of usage per day.

But after COVID, with remote learning dependent on devices, this number jumped to over 19% engaging screens for 3+ hours daily.

Kids Spend Over 5 Hours Daily on Screens

According to Fortune Magazine, kids aged 8 to 12 spend an average of 5.5 hours daily using phones, tablets, and computers. Alarmingly, teens over 13 exceed this, averaging 8.5 hours of screen time outside school.8

Studies indicate that much of this screen time is unfulfilling, with teens often feeling isolated while using devices alone in their rooms to visit social media.

As leisure screen use increases, parents grow concerned about associated risks such as depressed moods, disrupted sleep, and academic decline.

17-Year-Olds Spend Nearly 6 Hours on Social Media

Teen social media use intensifies with age, per Gallup data. While 13-year-olds spend 4.1 hours on social platforms daily, 17-year-olds engage nearly 6 hours per day.9

Girls also outpace boys by logging 5.3 hours versus 4.4 hours of boys.

Teens Spend Nearly 2 Hours Daily on TikTok

A new study by the University of Michigan C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital tracking teen screen time reveals users ages 11-17 spend a median of 1 hour and 52 minutes daily on TikTok.10

That surpasses time spent on other social apps like Instagram at 16 minutes and Snapchat at 10. According to the research, only YouTube comes close to 40 minutes of average daily use.

How Much Screen Time is Too Much? Average Acceptable Screen Time

Experts Suggest 1-4 Hours Recreational Screen Time

While no definitive limits exist, experts typically recommend 1-2 hours of recreational screen time on school days and 3-4 hours on weekends for kids and teens. These serve more as flexible guidelines than hard rules.

Moderately limiting screen use is unlikely to cause significant harm. Strict teenage limits often backfire, so focus on proper sleep by keeping devices out of bedrooms instead. Lead by example - modeling healthy tech habits yourself remains vital.

1 in 4 Parents Restrict Kids’ Screen Time

A new survey reveals only 25% of parents strongly limit screen time for children aged 3-19, a sentiment consistent across both mothers and fathers.11

While parents with advanced degrees curb screen time marginally more than less educated ones, the political outlook shows a stronger link.

Very conservative parents limit nearly twice as much as liberal ones - 41% versus 23%.

Conclusion

As screen devices continue dominating daily life, healthy technology habits remain vital.

Though few parents enforce strict limits, studies link excessive usage to developmental challenges in infants. Real-world interaction, experts emphasize, is key to nurturing well-being.

Moderation and wisdom, not abstinence, offer paths to ensuring technology improves rather than impedes living.
