How to Slow Down a Video in CapCut

Create slow motion in CapCut by changing clip speed. Learn normal and curve speed, how to keep slow motion smooth, and how to avoid choppy footage.

Slow motion adds drama and emphasis, and CapCut can create it from ordinary footage in a couple of taps. The trick is keeping the slowed clip smooth rather than stuttery. Here is how to do both.

The quick way: Normal speed

  1. Tap the clip on your timeline to select it.
  2. Tap Speed on the toolbar.
  3. Choose Normal.
  4. Drag the slider below 1x. For example, 0.5x plays at half speed, and 0.25x at quarter speed.

The clip stretches out on the timeline as it slows down.

Keep it smooth

Slowing a clip means fewer real frames have to cover more time, which can look choppy. To fix that:

  • In the Speed panel, turn on Smooth slow motion (also called optical flow). CapCut generates extra in-between frames so the motion looks fluid.
  • When filming, record at a high frame rate (60fps or more) if your phone supports it. More frames to begin with means smoother slow motion.

For drama: Curve speed

If you want a clip to ramp from fast to slow, use Speed > Curve. Pick a preset like Bullet or Jump cut, or build your own curve by dragging the points. This lets a single clip whip in quickly, hang in slow motion on the key moment, then speed back up, a look that feels cinematic.

Match the audio

Slowing a clip also slows its original sound, which can sound strange. Either mute the clip’s audio and add music instead, or drop the volume so the warped audio is not distracting.

Keep going

Speed control is one of the most fun tools in editing. The full CapCut course covers speed, effects and editing technique from beginner to advanced, and you can try it free.

Frequently asked questions

How do I slow down a video in CapCut?

Select the clip, tap Speed, choose Normal, and drag the slider below 1x. A value like 0.5x plays the clip at half speed for a slow-motion effect.

Why does my slow motion look choppy in CapCut?

Slowing footage stretches fewer frames over more time, which can look stuttery. Turn on Smooth Slow Motion (optical flow) in the Speed settings so CapCut generates in-between frames, and film at a high frame rate when you can.

What is curve speed in CapCut?

Curve speed lets you speed up and slow down within a single clip, so you can ramp smoothly from fast to slow. It is great for dramatic hits and montage moments.
