A blurred background hides distractions and makes your subject pop, giving even phone footage a soft, cinematic feel. CapCut can blur the whole frame in seconds, or blur only the background while your subject stays sharp. Here is how to do both.
Blur the whole clip (quick)
If you want the entire frame softened, for example behind text:
- Select your clip on the timeline.
- Tap Effects, then the Basic category.
- Add the Blur effect and adjust its strength.
The full frame is now blurred. This is handy as a backdrop for titles or intros.
Blur only the background (keep subject sharp)
This is the look most people want: a crisp subject over a soft background.
- Add your clip to the main track.
- Add the same clip again as an Overlay directly on top, lined up exactly.
- Select the overlay and tap Cutout > Remove Background, so only your subject remains on the overlay.
- Select the main clip underneath and apply the Blur effect to it.
Now the background layer is blurred, while your cut-out subject stays perfectly sharp on top.
Get it looking natural
- Keep the blur moderate. A gentle blur reads as natural depth; too much looks obviously fake.
- Make sure the overlay and the main clip stay aligned so the sharp subject sits exactly over the blurred version.
- Good lighting on your subject makes the background cutout cleaner, which makes the whole effect more convincing.
