Transitions smooth the jump between two clips and can add rhythm to your edit. CapCut has plenty of them, but the secret to looking professional is using the simple ones well rather than piling on flashy effects. Here is how.
Step 1: Find the transition point
Transitions live at the join between two clips. On the timeline, look for the small white square icon sitting between two clips. If you do not see it, your footage is probably one continuous clip. Use the Split tool to cut it where you want the transition, and the icon will appear.
Step 2: Choose a transition
- Tap the white square between the two clips.
- A menu of transitions opens, grouped into categories like Basic, Motion and Effects.
- Tap one to preview it applied to your cut.
Step 3: Adjust the length
Most transitions have a duration slider. Shorter transitions feel snappy and professional; longer ones feel dramatic or dreamy. For most edits, keep them short. You can also tap Apply to all to use the same transition across every cut for a consistent style.
Which transitions to use
- Dissolve or fade: smooth and classic, great for a calm mood.
- A clean cut (no transition): often the most professional choice, especially for fast-paced content.
- Zoom or whip: energetic, good for social and action clips, but use sparingly.
The most common beginner mistake is using a different flashy transition at every cut. Pick one or two and stay consistent.
Timing tip
Transitions often work best landed on a beat if your video has music. Add your music first, then place your transitions on the beats for an edit that feels intentional.
