Frequently asked questions

What's the difference between markup and margin?

Markup is profit as a percentage of cost; margin is profit as a percentage of selling price. A $50 item sold for $100 is a 100% markup but a 50% margin: same dollars, different reference point.

How do I convert markup to margin?

Margin = markup / (1 + markup), so a 100% markup becomes a 50% margin. This calculator shows both from your cost and price so you do not have to do the maths.

What markup should I use?

It depends on your industry, overheads and positioning. Enter your cost and target price here to see the resulting margin, then adjust until the profit works for your business.

Should I price on margin or markup?

Margin is usually the better lens because it tells you what share of each sale is profit, which is what protects your business after costs. Markup is handy for quickly setting a price from a known cost.
